la poeta, la política and la pensadora
In 1976, when I was doing doctoral research on Paulo Freire’s educational approach to literacy in Lima, Peru, I found myself struggling with three parts of myself in conflict with each other. In Spanish, I called these, la poeta (the poet or artist), la política (the political person or activist) and la pensadora (the thinker). I translated them in English as the artist, the activist, and the academic. Ultimately, I decided that all were critical to me, and they would have to live in creative tension and/or feed each other. I have organized my website around these categories, although it is clear that the lines between them are very blurred, and often overlap, so some items appear in more than one category.
